The Urban Transitions Mission (UTM) and Google have released the third publication part of their collaboration to support cities in exploring the importance of using data for climate action. With urban planners in mind, ‘Transforming the future of Urban Planning with data and insights’ explores use cases from UTM cities, guidelines to tackle the pressing urban planning challenge, offering innovative approaches to help cities leverage climate data and insights across three stages of the urban planning process – Discovery, engagement and mobilization; assessment and planning; implementation , management and monitoring.
This publication explores how to tackle the process of designing and developing a city’s land, infrastructure, and services to create a sustainable and attractive urban environment, combining insights from Google’s Environmental Insights Explorer (EIE) with urban climate strategies to drive impactful, sustainable city development. Rich of insights from UTM cities on the use of Google EIE, the guide can be a useful instrument for urban planners, practitioners in sustainability departments and landscape architects on how tools such as Google EIE can be integrated in their planning processes, from ideation of the action to monitoring of results. The experiences of Renca and Puerto Montt (Chile); Miami-Dade County (USA); Cascais (Portugal) and Antalya (Turkey) delve into aspects related to the use of EIE in their specific geographies.
This guide is the third of a series developed by UTM in collaboration with Google; previous to it, a guide on ‘Data & Insights to accelerate impact finance and de-risk investments in cities‘ has been published, as well as one on ‘Data and Insights to Inform, Action and Monitor Local Mobility Policies‘.
