Our impact & city/activity spotlight

Our impact

106 pioneering cities

The Urban Transitions Mission partners with a global cohort of 106 pioneering cities to demonstrate integrated, people-centred pathways towards holistic, net-zero, climate resilient urban transitions. The cohort cities are leading the way in clean energy adoption, net-zero carbon innovation and sustainable city planning.

120 million people

Together they represent a combined population of over 120 million people. Their collective action is not only driving measurable local impact but also inspiring cities, regions and national governments around the world on their journey towards decarbonisation.

1.1 million round-trip economy

To put this into perspective, our impact is equivalent to eliminating 1.1 million round-trip economy class flights between Buenos Aires, Argentina and Amman, Jordan by 2050.

180 million tons

By 2030, based on cities’ current targets, the UTM cohort has the potential to reduce annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by over 180 million tons of CO2 equivalent (MtCo2e) – compared to a business-as-usual trajectory.

A solution broker empowering cities for net-zero urban transitions

UTM is the solutions broker.

The Urban Transitions Mission empowers cities around the world to fast track their journey toward holistic, net-zero, and climate-resilient urban transitions.

Through a tailored mix of capacity-building, technical assistance, and piloting support, UTM provides the tools and expertise cities need to move from ambition to action.

Our support is delivered through two core pathways

UTM works closely with each participating city to identify key challenges and co-design actionable strategies.

This includes:

By connecting cities with the right expertise, resources and networks, The Urban Transitions Mission accelerates the uptake and scaling of impactful solutions, driving progress toward just, inclusive and sustainable urban futures.

A curator and an accelerator of innovation

We provide a needs-driven support.
Innovation and technology play an increasingly central role in planning for net-zero urban
futures. We believe their deployment needs to be tailored to suit the diversity of the urban
context and needs to be inclusive, collaborative and empowering.

UTM aligns the knowledge and assistance it offers to
the different stages of a city climate action journey.

We invite relevant private sectors and academia partners to address existing R&I gaps.

A testing and implementation ground for Mission Innovation

Cities are an ideal ground for testing and piloting innovative technical, financial and regulatory solutions to secure sustainable energy transitions. The UTM closely collaborates with other Missions to define specific scopes of mutually beneficial collaboration, identifying urban content in ongoing demonstration projects, and furthering joint activities with other MI Missions, such as the Green Powered Future (GPFM), the Clean Hydrogen or the Carbon Dioxide Removal Missions.
